Since Brick gives us a lot more characters to use in a post and we’ve been discussing moving NAFO forward, I thought I’d post my NAFO Origin Story.
For 2.5 years I had followed the war. I worked with a really sweet lady from Ukraine who still had family there. When the full scale invasion commenced she was almost ill from stress. I wanted to do something… to help in some way, but I didn’t know what to do. I felt what was going on was wrong. I started buying Ukraine patches on Amazon and adorned my stuff with them, but that was all I knew to do. I kept wanting to ‘do something’ but I had NO idea what or how to help. It bothered me a lot. I felt called to try to make a difference, but didn’t know how. Truthfully I had a lot of guilt over it.
Then one day an article from Wired popped up on my Google news feed. It was titled “The Shit-posting Cartoon Dogs Sending Trucks, Drones, and Weapons to Ukraine’s Front Lines”. I read it. That article was like a NAFO recruiting poster for me.
I went to the original NAFO website and read how to become a Fella. I immediately sent support to the 69th Sniffing Brigade. I sent the receipt to The Forge. Within a couple of days I had a Fella. Suddenly I had discovered a way I could actually *do something*. I’ve been all in since.
I learned that Fellas were big on social media, so I started following Fellas. I met tons of others who, like me, wanted to make a difference and help Ukraine. I made friends. I started helping with fund raisers. I was finally able to ‘do something’ and it felt terrific.
I’m telling everyone this because the NAFO website is what got me here. If I hadn’t seen that website I would probably never have joined. Because of that, I’m super passionate about keeping our history alive. I’ve never met another Fella in person and yet I feel such a part of the community. Heck, I wouldn’t even be here on FrogsDen without Shy telling me about it.
NAFO is a group of good people who are passionate about Ukraine and we’ve made a difference. We need to preserve our history as we continue to move forward.
