Y'know the "call of the void"?
You're minding your own business doing whatever when suddenly your brain out of nowhere intrusively proposes "hey, what if I <something utterly horrible>" - leaving the rest of your conscious mind to recoil in horror. It's sort of a diagnostic self-test for your internal pattern recognition and predictive modeling.
You get kind of a flash before your eyes of a terrible outcome and reinforce how you would never ever ever do that
I've been getting ... Something like the opposite? An intrusive thought to ATTEMPT TO do something kind... and then, following a rapid fire tableau of ways it could go horribly wrong and blow up in my face, I choose to keep my mouth shut and not disturb anyone.
There was a small family that came in to the noodle place where i was having some sushi and udon, and i heard them proudly proclaiming how their daughter just had her first day of school today.
I felt the strangest funny impulse to pay for their food in congratulations for the milestone. And then before I could even decide whether or not i wanted to go through with it, my imagination suddenly flashbanged me: you're creepy, you'll make them uncomfortable, they'll think you're a threat, that you have some kind of angle.
So I kept my mouth shut. Never even looked their way. Paid for my meal quietly and left while uttering as few words as possible.
I would have liked to live in a world where a family could get a free meal on successfully navigating their daughter's first day of school...
But my pattern recognition and predictive modeling convinced me that this world is not eligible to become that kind of world.
