Been a school Crossing Guard on the same corner for 15 years. There was a kid called George years back with a bad stutter, got bullied really bad for it at school. Every morning he'd tell me one fact he'd memorized the night before, to practice talking to someone who'd actually wait for him to finish. I acted amazed every time, even the dumb ones. Anyway. Last month a man in a suit stops at my crosswalk, looks at me, smiles, and says "penguins can't taste fish." I knew instantly. I hugged him like he was my own son, and I stood there on the corner holding my stop sign like a mess with happy tears while he talked to me till the end of my shift. He stuttered twice the whole time. I have never been more proud of anyone in my life. He's coming over on the 4th of July.
