Happy Friday and here is tonight's Tubi Streaming channel Picks: I use a 5-star rating system, with five stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ being the highest score (1) Death Sentence (2007) 5 stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐Kevin Bacon plays Nick Hume, a devoted father whose eldest son is murdered by a gang member during a gas station robbery. Frustrated when the killer receives a lenient sentence, Nick takes justice into his own hands and tracks him down, triggering a violent war of retribution between his family and the gang. I loved every moment of watching this film (2) Kiss the Girls (1997) 5 stars⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ a psychological thriller based on James Patterson’s 1995 best-selling novel of the same name. Directed by Gary Fleder, the film stars Morgan Freeman as forensic psychologist and author Dr. Alex Cross and Ashley Judd as Dr. Kate McTiernan. Well directed and the cast of course was phenomenal. This is one of my classic psychological thrillers I don't mind watching repeatedly (3) Spell (2020) 5 stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ a folk horror-thriller directed by Mark Tonderai and written by Kurt Wimmer. It blends elements of backwoods survival horror (in the vein of Misery) with dark Hoodoo magic. You can't go wrong with Loretta Devine (Waiting to Exhale) acting in anything. This is one of my favorite Southern Gothic horror-thrillers. It grabs your attention from start to finish (4) Unbowed (originally released in 1999 and directed by Nanci Rossov) is a historical drama. 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is one of my favorite historical romance dramas. Here is a summary: Following the American Civil War, a U.S. Army officer orchestrates an experimental government assimilation program. A small group of Lakota Sioux men including a proud, defiant warrior named Waka Mani (played by Jay Tavare) are sent far from their homeland to enroll in a historically Black college in the South. (HBCU and I am a proud graduate and alumnae of an HBCU) Cultural Friction and Conflict The arrival of the Lakota men causes immediate tension on campus. The students and faculty at the college are already navigating the heavy burdens of post-reconstruction America, racial prejudice, and the push for higher education. The Lakota men, fiercely protective of their cultural identity and deeply reluctant to assimilate into white-dominated societal expectations, struggle to fit in. This creates friction and a culture clash between the Black students and the Native newcomers as both groups try to understand one another. The Romance Amidst the initial hostility and institutional pressure, a deep, unexpected bond forms between Waka Mani and a spirited, intelligent young Black woman at the college named Cleola (played by Tembi Locke). Despite coming from entirely different backgrounds, Waka Mani and Cleola find that they share heavy parallels in their histories, struggles against oppression, and a fierce resilience. Their growing connection evolves into a forbidden romance that defies the rigid social boundaries of the era
